Hydrothol provides control where you need it, in the application area, not away from the target area. For this reason, Hydrothol is a valuable tool in improving access to the water for recreational activities such as swimming, fishing, and water skiing. Hydrothol Granular herbicide is quickly absorbed by the plants, allowing for effective aquatic weed control in small areas of large water bodies. Hydrothol is effective in muddy or murky water because it does not bind to the suspended sediment or organic matter. What are these products used for?

Hydrothol weed killer for lakes will kill floating and submerged weeds plus some algae. MuckMaid will eat the inches of muck at the bottom of your water and make your dock area usable again.

What are the active ingredients?

  • Hydrothol: salt of endothall
  • MuckMaid: beneficial bacteria, enzymes, and trace minerals

How do you apply these lake weed killer pellets?

Use a scoop or broadcast spreader to evenly spread Hydrothol granules over where the weeds and algae are. Use a scoop to toss MuckMaid pellets into the area where you have muck.

Is granular or liquid better?

Both our Granular Dock & Swim Area Products and the liquid Dock & Swim Area Products work great.

Are these dock and swim area products safe for fish and wildlife?

Hydrothol Granular is EPA approved for aquatic use. It is labeled as toxic to fish (they can sense it and stay away); do not use it in ponds. MuckMaid muck pellets contain natural bacteria and it is completely safe to use with the fish, frogs, turtles, etc. in the water as well as the animals that come visit.

Will they kill duckweed, algae, and submerged plants?

Hydrothol will kill duckweed and a wide variety of submerged weeds plus some algae. MuckMaid is not designed to kill plants or algae; it eats the inches of muck at the bottom of your water.

When should I apply these lake weed killers for lakes?

Apply Hydrothol when the water temperature is 60° F or warmer and the weeds/algae are actively growing. Apply MuckMaid every 2-4 weeks when the air temperature is 50-90° F.

When will I see results after applying them?

Hydrothol will kill lake weeds in 17-21 days. Because the bacteria in MuckMaid are live and going through a natural muck eating process, you’ll see full results in 30-45 days.

How to apply

  • Use a broadcast spreader or scoop for easy application of Hydrothol Granular and a scoop for MuckMaid
  • Evenly broadcast Hydrothol over the algae or plants
  • Broadcast the MuckMaid pellets into the area you want to reduce muck

When to apply

  • Apply Hydrothol on a sunny, calm day when the water temperature is 60° F or warmer
    • Treat when plants/algae are actively growing and near the surface of the water
    • May re-treat every 4-6 weeks or when there is new growth
  • Apply MuckMaid 1-7 days after Hydrothol and on a sunny, calm day when the air temperature is between 50° and 90° F
    • May re-treat every 2-4 weeks to reach desired results

Other tips

  • Hydrothol application rates based on a 4 ft. average depth, areas with dense growth may require a higher rate to be used
    • Needs 6-12 hours of contact time
    • In a pond, treat small sections at a time. Wait 10-14 days before applying next treatment.

    I have had no luck with these products. Two applications of each over the last year, and we still have a difficult weed problem and muck about three inches deep. We live on a sand bottom lake with beautiful clear water, so this is quite frustrating. We had to hire a weed removal company to come in with machinery to remove the weeds, yet even with use of these products the weeds come back within a couple of months. Maybe I got a bad batch? Doesnt’t seem to do anything but cost me money.
