Torpedo grass grows up to three feet tall with narrow, stiff leaves that have sharp points and a waxy or white coating on the surface.

Description

Stems grow up to three feet tall directly from a creeping rhizome.

Narrow, stiff leaves have sharp points on the tips, a waxy or white coating on the surface, and are flat or folded. Leaves grow alternately on the stem and become more frequent towards the top of the stem.

Flowers grow three to nine inches long.

 

Torpedo grass can grow in water or on land. It is a variety of panic grass. Panic grasses are common and difficult to tell apart.

Location

Torpedo grass can be found in California and the southern United States: Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, Florida, South Carolina, and North Carolina.
