Pond and Lake Services
Overview
A dirty, overgrown pond or lake can quickly become an eyesore. Not only does it take away from the beauty of your property, but maintaining and cleaning a water body is also labor-intensive and often requires specialized equipment that some homeowners don’t have on hand.
Fortunately, Lake Restoration provides professional lake and pond treatment services designed to make caring for your pond or lake straightforward, effective, and worry-free. Since 1977, our team has helped property owners keep their water bodies clean, clear, and enjoyable throughout the season.
What Do Lake Restoration’s Services Include?
Every pond or lake is unique, and so is every treatment plan. Different types of algae and aquatic weeds require different solutions, which is why Lake Restoration does not take a one-size-fits-all approach. Our treatments are specifically tailored to the conditions of the water being treated.
A single treatment may look very different from the next, depending on the growth present. When our applicators visit your property, they assess the species to target and treat accordingly. We use a blend of algaecides and herbicides that will give the best control of the growth. Whether your water body has been overtaken with algae, clogged with weeds, or burdened by muck, our services are designed to restore and improve your waters.
Lake Services
For lake shore homeowners, our services focus on targeted treatments that enhance both appearance and usability. Standard lake treatment services are performed twice each summer per the Department of Natural Resources (DNR). The first application is completed in June, followed by a second treatment four to six weeks later. This schedule ensures consistent results during the busiest season of lake recreation.
Lake Restoration, Inc. is headquartered in Rogers, MN, and we provide lake weed maintenance for residents on qualifying lakes within the surrounding counties. Pricing is set per lake. For details on eligibility and cost, contact our team directly at 1-877-428-8898 or serviceforms@lakerestoration.com.
While our standard lake shore maintenance targets most weeds and algae, certain native plants such as Chara, clasping leaf pondweed, and Vallisneria are difficult to control with herbicides. We use a combination of algaecides and herbicides to combat all species present, but these specific species are excluded from our service guarantee.
In addition to regular weed and algae treatments, we also offer specialized add-on services that address other common lakefront issues. One of these services is muck reduction, which helps digest one to three inches of organic material per treatment. Over time this process restores a cleaner, firmer lake bottom. Another popular add-on is swimmer’s itch treatment, which targets the snails that carry the parasites responsible for this irritating condition.
Lake treatments must also follow the DNR guidelines. In Minnesota, the DNR allows the width of treatment to be up to one half of an owner’s shoreline, up to 100 feet maximum. We are allowed to go 100 feet into the water for the length with exceptions. These guidelines apply regardless of the amount of shoreline owned. While these rules are standard, the DNR reserves the right to adjust treatment allowances on a case-by-case basis.
Pond Maintenance Services
Pond treatments are offered as ongoing programs to ensure consistent results. Depending on the program, ponds are treated five times between May and September, or seven times between April and October. Treatments are spaced about a month apart, which limits algae and weeds all season long.
The seven treatment program is highly recommended because it provides comprehensive coverage from spring through fall. This approach controls growth early in the season, prevents problems from escalating mid-summer, and ensures your pond stays clear into the autumn. Unlike lake treatments, pond pricing is based on acreage and is available to customers within range. Call or email our team for eligibility and cost.
Standard pond maintenance service includes treatments for weeds and algae, where again we use multiple products to target the species present. For ponds with heavier organic buildup, we also offer nutrient reduction as an add-on. This treatment reduces the organic matter that algae and plants feed on and improves water clarity. In addition, pond dye can be applied to enhance the visual appeal of the water while filtering sunlight.
Most pond treatments do not require permits through the DNR. However, if a pond is larger than three acres or located on a wetland, a permit may occasionally be necessary. In these cases, the DNR will determine whether treatment is allowed and which limits apply.
Additional Services
In addition to customary lake and pond treatments, Lake Restoration offers specialized services to address a wide range of shoreline challenges. For example, our Goose D-Fence system prevents geese from accessing your waterfront. By setting up a nearly invisible barrier around the water’s edge, this system reduces unwanted goose activity and the mess they leave behind.
We also provide emergent and floating weed treatments for cattails, water lilies, bulrush, and more. These treatments require different products than submerged weed and algae treatments, and timing is critical for success. Our trained applicators perform these applications in late summer to early fall, when plants are directing their energies to the root system. This ensures a more complete kill down to the root.
Looking ahead, Lake Restoration is also creating a mechanical program for weed and silt removal. Using specialized equipment, our applicators can uproot nuisance plants and stir up compacted silt on the lake or pond bottom. The device is mounted to your dock for a contracted period of time. While still in early stages, this service is expected to provide another effective option for aquatic weed removal for a limited number of customers in the 2026 season.
