Mizzen® frequently asked questions:
What types of algae are controlled with a pond algaecide? You can kill filamentous algae and planktonic algae with a copper algaecide. If you have Chara, we recommend combining Mizzen® with copper sulfate for best results. Mizzen® will also work on killing Starry Stonewort. If you have Starry Stonewort in your lake, you will need to treat at the maximum label rate per average depth.
Is it safe to use an algaecide if I have fish in my pond? You can use Mizzen® algaecide in a pond or lake with fish; however, trout, koi, goldfish, and channel catfish have a copper sensitivity. If you have these fish in your pond, we recommend using Cape Furl®, a fish-safe algaecide for algae control.
How do I get rid of algae in my pond? You can eliminate algae in your pond by using a pond algaecide to kill the algae. Regrowth can occur within 10-14 days. To deter future algae growth, we recommend using nutrient reducers to help reduce the phosphorus and nitrate levels in the water. Phosphorus reduction has been identified as the most effective strategy for limiting algae growth. Use PhosControl® 7 days after treating with Mizzen® to knock down phosphorus levels and limit re-growth.
How often can I treat with an algaecide? It is best to treat your pond in sections so you do not deplete the oxygen levels in the pond. We recommend treating a section of your pond, and then 7-10 days later treat another section. Re-growth can occur within 10-14 days; re-treat as needed.
What is the best way to apply an algaecide? We recommend diluting the pond algaecide with water and then spraying it evenly across the surface of the water or spot-treat the algae mats as needed. The algae should be present and actively growing. An algaecide works best when it is applied when the water temperature is 60° F or warmer and it is a clear, calm, sunny day.
Is Chara an algae, and how do I eliminate it? Chara is a gray-green branched algae that is often mistaken for a submerged plant, but it is not rooted to the bottom of a pond or lake. Chara algae is best eliminated when it is young and has fewer calcium deposits. We recommend using a combination of Mizzen® algaecide and copper sulfate crystals to give you the best control in your pond or lake.
Can Mizzen® be mixed with other products? Mizzen® can be mixed with other products to eliminate algae and other aquatic vegetation; you can mix Mizzen® with an herbicide. We recommend using Mizzen® algaecide and Dibrox® herbicide for the best combination! To eliminate Chara in your pond, use Mizzen® algaecide and copper sulfate crystals.

we have a small bass pond ~2ac that is shallow and gets warm and grows lots of algae along the edges. I spray extra thick dose from my hand held battery powered sprayer which will get about 20′ distance all along the pond edge. Couple of days..big improvement.

I have a quarter acre pond in Indiana that is fed by farm field drainage. The battle with the algae is now over, and I won. Mizzen as directed, a little pond dye, and an aerator did the trick. Once or twice during the season, I will use Debrox on individual, stubborn weeds but Mizzen is the star of the show! I highly recommend it.

Have used this product for 15 years. Does excellent against algae blooms in my large pond fed by chemical fertilizer runoff. I go a bit strong and lake stays clean all summer. Water just sparkles.

I have used the product for about 5 years in our pond. It takes care of the unsightly algae. Very easy to use. It does not take long to get the product once I order.

This stuff rocks!!! I use it 3 to 4 times a summer as I see the algae blooms start. 3 days later Kaboom! no more algae…. never seems to bother my fish or ducks at all even though I spray the whole pond each time. I have a harder time controlling the weeds around the banks (can’t quite mow all the way to the waters edge) then I do with my algae. You’ll love this product!!

I have used this product for 3 summers. I am pleased with the results. It doesn’t harm the fish, frogs or turtles in the pond. It works rather quickly too.

Used Mizzen in a boat harbor with some calm spots that developed mats of algae , some I think might of been blue /green but not confirmed . Mizzen use as directed worked great and I will keep some on hand for future treatment. Great product and fast shipping. Thanks LR

I have a quarter acre pond that was covered in a thick blanket of algae. I sprayed the Mizzen over all the algae and the very next morning the blanket of algae was gone. I am impressed. I am going to continue to use this product as it works faster and its cheaper than other products I have used

It did not work like they said it would. They told me that I need to treat my pond once a month so they expect me to spend $500 a month on my pond. Uh no! Why is this product not working? My pond still looks exactly the same as it did before I put the product in.

I really wanted the Mizzen to be a great product since it was saving me a lot over Cutrine. It was OK, but found I had to use twice as much to equal the effectiveness of Cutrine therefore negating any savings. I wish it would have worked better!

I have used this for 3 seasons now. I have experienced no fish or frog die off. I use it in my main pond and the silt pond. I see all the little tadpoles swimming happily along. Does not affect the game fish or the grass Carp but sure works on the bubbling bright green algae. I am in South Carolina and I try to “git’r’done” early in the season when it’s starting to bloom. Makes sense…the less algae, the less (properly applied according to directions) product you’ll need to use. My pond would look like a swamp without it.

Mizzen works fine. However, you do have to follow instructions and spray small areas at a time or you will lose some fish. Most importantly, you need to aerate your pond especially when its hot an after using a lot of this product.

I bought 2 gallons(their recommendations for 1 acre pond) and sprayed about 1/3 of my pond. It seems to have fertilized the algae and killed about 250 fish. Now I have a algea problem and no fish. DO NOT BUY!!

I read what came with product and saw no directions, so I sprayed some patches with what I assumed was a safe amount. Apparently not since my fish began dying and my once pristine pond became a mess. I’ll be returning the second gallon.

Within 2 days after applying Mizzen to my 1/2 acre pond, the algae began to die and has been continuing it’s treatment over a number of weeks. Great product and reasonably priced. I also bought the Tormada and love it!!!

Wow! I had been fighting a losing battle with the algae in our pond for the last two years! I sprayed this on it, and the algae was thick and matted in areas, and 48 hours later, almost all of it has disappeared! You have no idea how happy I am to have finally found this product!

Did not work at all.

I have a lot of fish in my pond and I was worried about killing them. I followed the directions on the bottle and did portions of the pond at a time. No more algae and no dead fish! Completely satisfied!
